A static mixer is a precision engineered device for the continuous mixing of fluid materials. Normally the fluids to be mixed are liquid, but static mixers can also be used to mix gas streams, disperse gas into liquid or blend immiscible liquids. The energy needed for mixing comes from a loss in pressure as fluids flow through the static mixer. One design of static mixer is the plate-type mixer and the other device consists of mixer elements contained in a cylindrical (tube) or squared housing. Mixer size can vary from about 6 mm to 6 meters diameter. Typical construction materials for static mixer components included stainless steel, polypropylene, Teflon, PVDF, PVC, CPVC and polyacetal.
Applications
Today, static mixers are used for a wide range of different applications in many different market segments. A common application is mixing two-component adhesives (e.g., epoxy) and sealants. Other applications include wastewater treatment and chemical processing. Static mixers can be used in the refinery and oil and gas markets as well, for example in bitumen processing or for desalting crude oil. In polymer production, static mixers can be used to facilitate polymerization reactions or for the admixing of liquid additives.
The static mixer can be used for mixing, emulsification, neutralization, absorption, extraction, reaction, and strengthening heat transfer and other processes of liquid - liquid, liquid - gas, liquid - solid, gas - gas, and can also be used for intermittent operation and continuous operation within a range of very high viscosity in the state of different flow types (laminar flow, transition flow, and turbulent flow). A brief introduction to the scope of different applications is made at first in the following.
(1) Liquid - liquid mixing
The fluids with a viscosity in the range of 10 Mpa from the flow layer to turbulent flow can be mixed well. The smallest diameter of dispersed droplets can reach 1 ~ 2μm, and they distribute uniformly in size.
(2) Liquid - gas mixing
The static mixer can make the phase interface between liquid - gas two-phase components keep continuouHSMLy updated and full contact, and the bubbling tower and sieve-plate column can be replaced under certain conditions.
(3) Liquid - solid mixing
When a small quantity of solid particles or powder mixes with a liquid (the area of the solids accounts for about 5% of the area of liquid) in the turbulence condition, and using the static mixer can force the solid particles or powder to be fully dispersed, so as to extract or bleach the liquid.
(4) Gas - gas mixing
It can be used to mix cool and hot gases and to mix different gas components.
(5) Strengthening heat transfer
As the static mixer increases the contact area of the fluid, which improves the heat transfer coefficient. In general, the cooling or heating of gases is completed by use of the static mixer, the heat transfer coefficient of gases can be increased by 8 times; the heat transfer coefficient of gases for heating viscous liquids can be increased by 5 times; the heat transfer coefficient can be increased by 8.5 times when condensing the gas in which a large quantity of non-condensable gases exist; the heat transfer of polymer melt can reduce the temperature and viscosity gradient on the pipe cross-section.
